If you are a parent, you probably want to know what your kids are doing on the Internet. After all, they may have access to inappropriate material, including pornography, violence and hate speech.
The Federal Trade Commission offers a free guide, ``Net Cetera,'' which is full of practical tips to aid parents in helping their kids navigate the online world.
The guide suggests that parents be honest with kids. Try not to scare them away, but make sure they aren't completely naive. Among the tips: When your child is young, it's understandable to supervise them; or tell your tweens to stay off certain websites. Consider setting limits for online usage.
Remind your kids that they have to be careful about what they put online, because they can't take it back. Even if they delete the information, they have little control over older versions. On social networking sites, privacy settings are available. Tell your kids to block people that have made them nervous or bullied them.
